Welcome to the Hempstead Church, a United Methodist Church in the New York Area. Our congregation is a safe place for all people to worship. Our mission is to become a loving, caring, and compassionate community of faith as we reach out to share God’s love to every person we encounter in our faith journey. Therefore, wherever you are in your own faith journey, we invite you to discover among us God’s transforming love for your life!
The United Methodist Church of Hempstead (UMCH) is located at the corner of Washington and Front Streets, the main thoroughfare in the downtown/central business district in the Incorporated Village of Hempstead. The UMCH is surrounded by commercial corridors, Town Hall, District Courthouses, public and Catholic schools of all levels, and a myriad of religious institutions.

OUR HISTORY
Faithful since 1822
The United Methodist Church of Hempstead was organized in May of 1822. Our first services were held in the home of Stephen C. Bedell on the corner of Main and Jackson Streets. Bedell Street is named after him. When you enter our sanctuary, you get a sense of the tradition and rich history of the church. So many people desire to have weddings, birthdays, and other celebrations and events here. We are open to the community. Several organizations utilize our facility Mondays through Fridays, including The Boys and Girls Club, Girl Scouts, Education and Assistance Corporation (EAC) Seniors Program, and Centro Salvadoreno, to name a few. We also share the facility with the Hispanic congregation of the United Methodist Church of Hempstead.
Because our community is diverse, there is perpetual change and transformation. Through it all, we have remained faithful to God’s call to faithfulness, love, and reconciliation; reaching out, strengthening, nurturing, renewing, and equipping all persons, as we build on the foundation of justice, freedom, peace, inclusiveness, love, and reconciliation. We welcome you to be a part of our history, fellowship, ministry, and community.
